A speakeasy bar was a hidden secret place that came about in the USA prohibition when alcohol was illegal. These places were set up so that alcohol could be sold illegally and consumed in secret. Nowadays they exist behind hidden doors taking you into dark dimly lit establishments, and although generally camouflaged, they offer a great escape from common busier places. Some places in New York go the whole hog with romantic underground lounges, old 20’s and 30’s settings serving classic cocktails. How cool is it to be led to what looks like just a big metal door covered in graffiti, but is in actual fact a secret door that takes you to the coolest bar in town. Unlike a Dive bar, you must dress to impress.
However there’s another twist on this slogan with their representation meaning to have a voice, or be allowed to speak freely.
